Tales from the Bus
Seen on the bus this morning:
One large black dude, in a plain white t-shirt and embellished jeans, carrying a shopping bag. A very fresh tattoo on either forearm.
Unremarkable until he sat down and began to unpack his shopping bag. First, out came a brand-new black Nationals baseball cap, still with the stickers underneath the brim. This immediately went on his head (backwards). Then, out came a bright new white t-shirt with the pixellated face of a rapper on the front (rapper was identified in script at the bottom, but alas, I could not make it out). This shirt was contemplated for a moment, then went on right over the one he was already wearing.
He crumpled up the shopping bag and stuck it in his pocket, then reached into the other pocket and began to accessorize. First came a large rhinestone cross, on a long rhinestone chain, which went around his neck. Then came two sparkly rhinestone bracelets, one pink and one white, which went on one wrist. Then came the big sunglasses, and the headphones connected to the CD player (and I completely missed where he had that stashed!)
Then he slumped down in his seat, ensemble complete.
I felt like I was watching a caterpillar attempting metamorphosis for the first time. I was a little sad when he got off the bus.
