How could I forget??

How could I forget my favorite Election Day tradition??

Okay, so it has nothing to do with actual politics, but that's not a bad thing at this point.

Election Day

Happy Election Day, US voters! Whatever the results, tomorrow will be a day of freedom, especially for those of us in or adjacent to swing states.

I voted during the early voting period last week, but saved my sticker to wear today. There was a really long line to vote early, but given the reports from Twitter and my coworkers, I wouldn't have done any better this morning. Kudos to all of you who are freezing in the long lines this morning!

It's not much of a secret (at least to anyone who follows me on Twitter) that I very happily voted for Obama, but what made me actually tear up with pride this time was casting my vote in favor of Question 6, Maryland's Marriage Equality referendum. This will approve or reject the marriage equality law passed by our state legislature and signed by our governor earlier this year. Marriage equality has never been passed in any US State by a popular vote before, so this is a big, historic deal. It's received a great deal of public support from political, religious, and community leaders and a good bit of money from me, so I'll be holding my breath for this as well as for the similar measures in Washington, Maine, and Minnesota.

Oh hey, just got a tweet that if you vote for Obama, Eric Balfour will come and wash your car naked! If you're a US voter and you have a car, that's a pretty good deal!

Happy Election Day!

Happy voting day to my fellow Americans! I hope you're all enjoying a sparkly civic glow from casting your ballots, no matter what your politics. My county has an ambulance fee question on the ballot this year, which also meant that there were a number of young and attractive fire and rescue crew out in the parking lot, politely offering me information about the issue. Bonus!

I left early this morning to get to my polling place, even though it's right next door to my apartments. In my workplace, having an "I Voted!" sticker is not just a display of civic pretentiousness--it's necessary armor if you plan on getting any work done. Otherwise, you have to explain to every. single. person you pass in the hallway or who walks by your office that yes, you are planning to vote, you're just going to go at lunchtime or on the way home, no, really, you'll be sure to leave plenty of time!

In the end, there was no line at all at my polling place (worrisome) so I was in and out in five minutes, having received my sticker from some very earnest (and very small) election workers. I got to work earlier than I have all week, though most of my coworkers are still trickling in with their stickers.

On the way to work, I indulged in my favorite election day tradition: listening to Arcadia's "Election Day." Here, you can listen to it, too! Yes, I know it doesn't actually have anything to do with elections. Shut up and look at how pretty Simon Le Bon was in 1985 and how poorly he lip syncs.

If John McCain has never been to Spain....

...I guess that's understandable, since it seems he doesn't know what continent it's on.
