I absolutely adore Will Smith. He can explain the Three Laws of Robotics off the top of his head.

(This was on Letterman, which I'm actually only watching to keep myself awake to see Michael Weatherly on Kilborn, but now I'm glad I did.)

A TV rec:

The Amazing Race is the best thing on TV right now. It's not your typical reality show fare -- it's armchair travel porn with a plot. Tonight's episode had me on the edge of my seat making little squeaking noises.

A movie rec:

Pretty much everyone at this point has seen Spider-man 2 and King Arthur, but my favorite movie of the summer so far is Before Sunset. It's the sequel to the 1994 indie movie Before Sunrise, in which Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy meet on a train, get off the train to spend just one night wandering Vienna together, and then part.

The sequel picks up nine years later as they spend just over an hour together (the film moves in real time) walking and talking in Paris, trying to find out if the connection they found nine years ago was real. It's the ultimate dialogue movie -- we follow these two characters and listen to their conversation, which slowly evolves from the casual to the intimate with fear, caution, and joy.

The script was written by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, together with director Richard Linklater. Their connection to and love for these characters is infectious. If the idea of a dialogue-based movie appeals to you the way it does to me, go rent Before Sunrise and then find Before Sunset in the theater.
