Uh huh. I knew it. Just frelling KNEW it.

From what I've heard so far, people who haven't read the book have been raving, and people who have read the book have NOT been happy. I'm not going until tonight, but I promised myself I'll refrain from judging until I've seen it.

This is exactly true, I think. The people I went with have never read the books, and they totally adored it. I, however, am deeply unhappy.

But I'm going again tonight, so we'll see if I can get over myself and enjoy it more than I did last night. We'll see how the sleep deprivation works out. *g*

Okay, to make a long story short, they made an awful lot of changes from the book. Many more than the last movie. Many of which did not make any logical or emotional sense to me, and a few of which were downright upsetting to me because of my emotional attachment to the character(s) involved.

Plus, I thought that the pacing/editing was too choppy, in a way that should have been avoidable for a filmmaker of Peter Jackson's obvious skill. Fast-paced, yes, but to the extent that I never felt immersed in the world like I did throughout FOTR. So not only did I have specific complaints about specific scenes, but I couldn't even get into all the rest of it like I wanted to. It was just too different.

They really liked the movie, so I'm afraid I was a bit of a wet blanket. :-( I tried not to play the book snob, but it was hard to feign enthusiasm. They wanted to know exactly what all the differences were--I think they expected quite a different reaction from me, based on last year.

I'm so sorry sweetie!!! Guess I'm one of those undereducated folks who liked the movie. It's been so long since I read the book that I didn't notice all the changes. I'm really, really sorry it didn't work for you. I hope it was better for you tonight. {big hug}
