Connexions, briefly (more or less)
Apr. 6th, 2004 04:37 pmI had a great time at Connexions this weekend, despite near-constant exhaustion and feeling like I didn't get to spend enough time with everyone I wanted to see, let alone meet several people I wanted to meet but didn't know were there. I even have a touch of the post-con letdown, which is making me sorta regret my decision not to go to MediaWest this year.
My con really started Thursday night, when
chelseafrew and I met up with
ndannais and
sithdragn for dinner and a viewing of the Starsky and Hutch movie. We tried not to disturb our fellow moviegoers, but I'm afraid we probably failed.
Friday -- got there too late for most of the con activities, thanks to work and really stupid traffic on the Beltway and I-95. Managed to meet up with
deannie and
noelql without any problem, though, and after a futile attempt at finding WW-friendly food at the hotel/bus station food court, they dragged us off to play a card game called "Killer Bunnies." OMG. So addictive. And extremely fannish -- I bonded with the Teal'c carrot card and refused to let it go for most of the evening. We breaked briefly for a trip to
sidewinder's room party, then went back to kill bunnies until the wee hours.
Saturday -- After too little sleep, I finally got to hit the dealer room (three SG-1 zines, one femslash zine, four magnets -- as dealer room trips go, not so bad) and start talking to people.
Then I somehow ended up at more panels than I had intended on. That started with the Stargate panel, which was less irritating than I had expected, except for the argument over whether there's a conflict in Sam's characterization if she wears girly clothes and biker leathers at different times. She wears skirts off-duty. Has for 7 seasons. Get over it, people. The flaws in her characterization have nothing to do with her fashion sense.
Anyway. Next up was
qurinas's femslash panel, which was great fun. It was cool to hear about so many femslash pairings, and also to see a good number of straight women attending and talking about femslash without freaking.
After that, I wandered into the Taboos panel, which turned out to be a very cool meta panel about the breakdown of taboo in fandom, the difference between ethical and functional taboos, and the role of the internet in hastening the fall of certain taboos.
After a quick jaunt to Arundel Mills for dinner, there was the evening entertainment and vid show. I lost my registration packet Friday night, so my entertainment in the raffle came from watching
obi_ki walk off with a couple of wins. The vid show was short, but quite good, with some interestingly done vids. Just one Stargate vid,
barkley's damn good Jack/Teal'c vid to Live's "Mother Earth Is a Vicious Crowd." I tend to see Teal'c as pretty much heterosexual, but I have to admit that Jack and Teal'c have the most intense slashy moments of intimacy of anyone in the series.
Then there was the pimping, as
noelql and
deannie showed a bunch of us the new US version of Touching Evil. I'm afraid I slept through most of it, but I liked what I saw enough to download all the episodes so far. Great black humor, which I love.
Sunday -- pretty low-key day. One last cruise of the dealer's room for some pretty earrings from
sidewinder and a fruitless search for an SG-1 patch for my new bag, then the Everwood panel Deannie and Noel were doing. That was fun, and made me really want to catch up with all the Everwood I've missed this season. Then it was just trying to chat with people one last time, an ill-fated attempt to find the local Outback Steakhouse for dinner, and then we said good-bye to Dean and Noel, and
chelseafrew,
ndannais,
sithdragn and I headed back down home where we knew where the steakhouses were. Mmmm, red meat and slash talk. No better way to close out a con weekend.
Now if I can just fight off this con crud cold that's trying to take root....
