Just a few brief comments on "New Order." I have to get up at an insane hour tomorrow to head up to Shore Leave, and I'm already under the weather from a toothache and a long week.

But -- new Stargate!

Okay, so admittedly my very biggest squee came from seeing the first ad for the new Battlestar Galactica series. That just about sent me into orbit.

But there was much to be happy about in SG, too. I even scribbled a few notes while watching, so in no particular order --

Michael Shanks was so clearly bored by all the exposition he had to churn out in that first hour that he was entertaining himself with facial expressions. Fortunately, I am also entertained by Michael Shanks's facial expressions, so I didn't mind so much while they tried to catch up all the new folks with every single bit of mythology from the last seven years. Or maybe it just felt that way.

The new Goa'uld are vaguely interesting, although I'd rather get right to Ba'al. What happened to all the System Lords from Summit/Last Stand, like Bastet and Morrigan? Did Anubis or Ba'al take them *all* out? I did like the one who, as [livejournal.com profile] chelseafrew pointed out, looks just like Antonio Banderas, if Antonio Banderas were in a cheap historical porn movie. And, you know, really not all that far from that on the old career path right now. Porntonio, as I've decided to call him until he interests me enough to remember my name, could be interesting if they make an effort to flesh him out. Though really, anybody is more interesting than Anubis.

Fifth -- how delightful to see you again! No hard feelings, right? Note to Sam: this is why when you kill your boyfriends, you have be sure to finish them off the first time. If they survive, they get bitter. Really, really bitter.

On a brief serious note, it was interesting to see Sam forced to take responsibility for her actions in a personal way. She isn't used to that. She's used to doing what she's told, so that even when she has to do something she doesn't like, she's able to distance herself from it by virtue of her orders. Fifth, however, is not impressed with the U.S. military command hierarchy, and in the end, all Sam can do is beg for mercy -- and then manipulate him again. An interesting lead-up to assuming her own command where the tough decisions are mostly going to be on her shoulders and her conscience.

In other Sam news... her hair -- much better this year! With one obvious exception, which leads right into... her subconscious -- still boring! Really, really boring. But at least she hasn't lost her touch at attracting the real crazy stalker types.

I miss Hammond. I miss the President. I miss the old Dr. Weir, though I liked this new one enough at the negotiating table that I think I'll adjust.

THOR!!! So good to see ya, little buddy. Even if you are acting like a serious dumbass, beaming the unstoppable Replicator onto your ship. But you named the ship after Daniel, so I forgive you, because I laughed and squealed really loudly over that. And how cute was Jack "interfacing with the Daniel Jackson?"

"Jack." "Daniel." Ahhh, yes. That's all I need to bring me back into the J/D love for the season. Nothing is sexier than them saying each other's names like that.

Also loved the Sam/Daniel moments -- the little looks and sibling affection, and how Daniel was the only one visibly affected by her presumed death.

A few very shallow "guh" moments -- Jack handing Daniel the big gun, and then the silmutaneous, ahem, cocking. Very sexy.
Teal'c's biceps. Daniel striding right into the Replicators, gun ablaze. "Who's your daddy?!"

The little team meeting to help Jack decide if he wants to be a general was beyond adorable. Of course he would turn to his team for advice, and of course they would be completely unhelpful. Sticking it to the man -- hee! Lots of warm team fuzzies.

I will get used to Teal'c's hair. Probably right around the time the show is finally cancelled.

And Daniel needs to stop going to the same stylist as Logan on second season Dark Angel. But he can keep the sexy black uniform jacket, even if I can't quite figure out where he got it under the circumstances.

Now that I've run so far up the shallow end that I've beached myself, I'm stopping. All in all, not a bad start to the season, I thought, at least on first viewing.

Off to see Michael Welch and Teryl Rothery at the con tomorrow, and to not buy any zines this year. I'll read the new SG-1 novel from England to distract myself.

Okay, tell me, why is this season debuting in the middle of the summer?

Yeah, why was Daniel wearing the black jacket with the green pants? That's just not right. But I love the jacket, so I won't question it.

All I know is that as long as Stargate SG1 has been on Sci-Fi, they have started in June or July and go for awhile and then have a winter premere in Jan or Feb.

Because it's SciFi, and they think they're special.

What, they need another reason? ;-)

I think Thor keeps changes of human clothes aboard ship for when Jack spends the night, and the jacket is black because Thor thinks Jack looks sexy in it. But Jack already had a jacket this time, so Daniel inherited it -- perhaps a move on Thor's part to make Jack jealous. Give Daniel the jacket, name the ship after him....

Or maybe I just really need to cut down on the caffeine today.
