The good thing about staying home today waiting for my date with the executioner dentist was that I distracted myself by finishing Trial by Fire, the first of the new Stargate pro novels being published in the UK. I had been planning to wait to hear how it was before I ordered it, but then I heard that it dealt with part of the aftermath of Abyss. I couldn't get to amazon.co.uk fast enough after that.

And after reading it, I'm happy to report that it's a very good book indeed. A good action plot, a really fun OC archaeologist, loads of Jack/Daniel angst, a sharp-edged Sam, and a solid, imposing Teal'c. I've heard the author is a fanfic writer, and while I don't know who she is, she definitely brings a certain fannish sensibility to it. And yes, it's definitely slashy. *g*

It isn't perfect, of course, but I felt it was more than worth my 5 pounds, even with the lousy exchange rate. Smallish print, too.

So, has anyone else read this yet? Any discussion about it anywhere?

I'm sorry you had such a horrible time with the dentist! That sucks. Eat some of that lovely Weight Watchers ice cream (I just found this in one of the markets we rarely go to--1 point! Yum!) to soothe the tooth (or, you know, the hole where the tooth used to be *shrug*).

And I just know you'll be bringing that UK SG1 novel to the windy city, won't you? *g*

Do you know that it was written by someone who's written *Stargate* fanfiction? I can't believe that information hasn't come out, if it was.

I want to read it, but I don't want to pay that much for it as she never made it to my "must read" list. She was on my "probably going to have a good time with this" list. *g* I'll wait and see if it comes out in the US.

You can read her other stories here:

They're long, plotty, heavy on the H/C. I thought that they were pretty decent. (There was something about them that bugged me though, but I can't remember what. I think the hurt part of the H/C might be a bit over the top, and I like H/C.)

Well, the prose isn't very good. I assume that was improved considerably for publication.

Of course I will, assuming [livejournal.com profile] chelseafrew finishes it in time. *g* And ice cream sounds like a good idea! I think I'll go eat some!

Oh, it's no secret. They're openly recruiting SG fan writers. [livejournal.com profile] barkley posted the link to her fanfic below, and it turns out I've actually read one of her stories. I just didn't connect her name. *g*

Thanks for the link! I think I started reading her biggest story once, and gave up because it wasn't quite working for me, though I don't remember why. I'll go back and read the others, though, just out of curiousity, and because she's clearly a Jack fan. *g*

The prose seemed fine in the book. Not exceptionally brilliant, but certainly decent. Proof of why all writers need editors, I suppose. *g*
