I give up. The movie's fine, okay? Leave me alone.

Actually, I did like it much more the second time. Pretty much 100% more. Knowing what to expect helps a lot.

Honestly, I'm not that much of a purist. I thought that most of the changes PJ made from the books in FOTR were great, and actually improved the story. I just disagree with some of the decisions he made this time.

I like it. Eventually, I'm sure I'll love it. Just have to see it some more. Tough job, but I think I'm the woman for it.

See now...

This is why it sucks that I don't live anywhere near you. I really want to see it again, but [livejournal.com profile] noelql is working right up until we leave, so no go there. And it's just too much fun as a movie to try to watch it by myself.

By the by, did a fervent Orlando-lover of our mutual acquaintance think he was just dreamy? Hmmm?

Just back from it myself, and I sorta know why you wrote what you did :)

Am going again on Monday, and I think it might well grow on me, and that the process is partially an adjustment to one's 'vision' and expectations. Certainly FotR, which I saw as homework Monday just gone for the first time in nearly a year - haven't got the dvd yet - was a far better film than I remember it being the first time round.

But (with a few spoilers)

Faramir! Grrrrrr!!! And why on *earth* did they change the ent council?!? It's as if Jackson et al made the decision that the hobbits should drive the action, and be the main force of persuasion to war against Mordor, rather than having people/ents come to the sacrifice of their own accord. I am particularly annoyed by the treatment of Faramir, since here he is far less of a contrast to Boromir, far less reflective and sober in his judgements.

Quite a few other little bits which seemed changed gratuitously, and I did actually feel the length of this film: rather than sitting there thoroughly spellbound, I found myself dissecting it a bit more than I should have been, which means it wasn't quite as entrancing. But some bits were - wow. The relief of Helm's Deep, the taking of Isengard, and the opening sequence, actually: all stunning. Lots more to say, but unfair of me to say it here and clog up your journal :)

My chief bitch(es): what became of Gimli (most ESPECIALLY Gimli), and like Gloriana, Faramir. Grr. Argh. The Gimli thing was enough to distract me from enjoying the movie more. pheh

I also felt the length of this one, checking my watch about 2 hours in.

I like it. It's okay. And I want to see it again, if only to see if my opinion improves, and like you, I'll know what's coming.

For the record, this icon totally cracks me up. No, I haven't seen Nemesis yet, so don't tell me anything. [g]

:(

For what it's worth, yesterday in DC I had a nice long conversation with a friend who might possibly love the LOTR as much as you do (though without the slash element thrown in. I think.).

He had the same problems with it that you did, and described to me in detail exactly why Jackson should be hurt for this. Though he is planning on seeing it a few more times before he makes up his mind.

Yay!

I'm glad you're better now. I didn't want you to be so unhappy with the movie. Frighteningly, we saw it again today. Twice in two days. I even left work early to go today. Scary, huh?

*nods*

That's pretty much how I feel.

I really liked almost everything else. I liked it *a lot*.

But the Faramir thing was just *such* a major thing, and since he's my favorite character...

I'm sure I'll be more reconciled to it the second time around. I'm trying to talk myself into a fanwank that makes sense out of his behavior.

You know she did. *g* He spoke Elvish, did you know?

And I wish you guys lived closer, too, but heck, I wish that most of the time!

Oh, feel free to clog my journal as much as you like! I agree with most of the points you touch on -- Faramir, as you may have noticed, is my most serious problem with Peter Jackson's adjustments to the book canon. I felt that the Ents were somewhat diminished by having to be tricked into going to war, but I can live with it. Faramir is tougher since, as you pointed out, he is meant to be a contrast to Boromir, well aware of his brother's weaknesses and wise enough to avoid the same temptations. He's meant to be more similar to Aragorn in nature than Boromir, so when I read that he would experience the temptation of the Ring, I had in mind something much closer to the non-canon Frodo and Aragorn scene at the very end of the last movie.

And I completely agree about feeling the length of the movie and not being entranced. I checked my watch several times during the first viewing, which wasn't something I'd expected to be doing. That's something that got better during the next two viewings, though. Once I knew what to expect, I stopped dissecting quite as much and was able to just enjoy the really glorious parts for their own sake.

Gimli really, really bugged me, too, the first time. I hate seeing a character I love and respect being made to look a fool just for comic relief. Not to mention that it gives the Legolas/Aragorn people more ammunition to make fun of Legolas/Gimli, my Tolkien OTP. *g*

But Gimli's one of the things that bothered me less the second and third times. PJ didn't do right by him, but it's not as bad as it seemed the first time.

LOL! Good, I'm glad I'm not the only one who entertained elaborate plans for Peter Jackson's punishment.

Yeah, he's my favorite, too. Boy, was I looking forward to his scenes. *sigh*

But I think I've finally convinced myself of a rationale for it all, so the next viewing should be much improved. *g*
