Random notes from the fannish portion of my weekend--

* Saw HP7.2 Saturday, along with the rest of the world (most of which I think were in our theater). I really thought I wouldn't cry all that much. I left the HP fandom after the hideous event at the end of Book 5 and have been distantly bitter about it ever since.

But at the first sight of Hogwarts, I burst into tears and spent the rest of the movie sobbing into a fistful of concession stand napkins. I guess I'm still a sucker after all.

* After the movie, I got conned into watching the first couple episodes of Suits. This show is like Cori-nip. It doesn't hurt that I've been looking for an excuse to get fannish about Gabriel Macht since Bad Company in 2002 (when [livejournal.com profile] chelseafrew and I devised a sweeping epic spy slash story between Agent Seale (who had no first name the whole movie) and Chris Rock's first character (who is on screen for all of 3 minutes before getting killed off)).

I don't think I'm ready to read fic yet, but I couldn't set a season pass fast enough when I got home.

* [livejournal.com profile] summerpornathon has been amazing fun, though like a lot of people, I'm getting kind of burned out. I had to laugh at this week's new challenge--I was really, really, really hoping it would be darkfic, and then it was...the opposite. I think I write fluffy, funny stuff better than I write heavy angst, in general, but I can't really do it on command without some previous inspiration. I was panicking pretty badly until I remembered the one kind of fluffy and cracky idea I wanted to write a while ago. It might actually be better suited for a short-short anyway.

At least my team is doing well--back to second place this week! I'm not convinced we can overcome Team Gluttony at this point, but we seem a pretty stubborn bunch on the whole, so you never know.

Still haven't seen HP7.2 myself, but I sympathize re: the end of Book 5. Not only was it horrible and bitter-ifying (haha go go gadget words!), but I was spoiled for it too. >:[ LAME.

DUDE I WAS SO EXPECTING WEEK 6 DARKFIC CHALLENGE TOO AND NOW I'M JUST LIKE DDDD: HAPPY ENDINGS?

Granted once I have an entry submitted I will probably feel free to glee out about all the happy times ahead (love those happy endings SO MUCH omg - just want everyone to do fix-it fic for me all the time) but when it comes to writing... ACK ACK IDEAS WHERE ARE YOU?

You're the second person on my flist who's mentioned Suits. I may have to jump on the wagon. :)

I WANTED DARKFIC SO BAD.

I'm in a major angst mode.

*glomp* go team though!

Oh yeah Suits.

I haven't seen like a huge outpouring of incredible fic like in X-Men fandom and I think I might just watch Suits to be intensely in love with both characters and then dabble in all the gratuitous Mike-whumped-Harvey-comforts id-fic and hopefully porn the fandom produces.

It was terribly bitter-ifying! I was spoiled for the fact that somebody died, but I didn't know who it was. I still remember sitting there, cheerfully devouring the book, trying to guess who was going to bite it. Was it Mr. Weasley? Professor McGonagall? Hagrid? All sad, to be sure -- but, I serenely announced to all my friends, as long as it wasn't Sirius Black, I'd be okay with it. They gave me a lot of pitying looks because they were all spoiled.

I also remember throwing the book across the room.

I LOVE HAPPY ENDINGS TOO. Totally with you on the happy endings and fix-it fic, so I'm also looking forward to reading the entries. But yeah, "happy" is an awfully vague prompt to inspire specific ideas, especially when it's your default mindset anyway.

*FLAIL*

I had one good idea I was saving up for the darkfic challenge, so I was hoping to get to use it (and, um, not have to think of anything new for this week). Happy Endings also seems like it would have been a better theme for the final week, but whatever, the mods don't have to cater to my sense of aesthetic. *g*

It's a lot of fun! The male leads are attractive and very slashable with a nice mentor/protege dynamic, and the supporting characters are also quite awesome so far. Definitely great summer TV.

It's so hard to switch to happy when you're in an angst mood, isn't it? I tried for cracky happy for last week's challenge, and it kept trying to turn wistful and angsty on me.

GO SLOTH! As long as one of the 9 of us can pull something off, we should be in good shape!

Yeah, it's too early for much fic, I think. We'll need to see how the characters develop. It's easier with a movie where you have just the 2 hours and then freedom to jump off wherever you want (well, and in the case of X-Men, three other movies and 40+ years of comic canon to work with!)

ha! this is me, too. I can dive into the angst and find mountains of inspiration but to be inspired by 'no angst allowed?' It's PAINFUL! Like writing with my left hand. :/

It's making the burn out BURN. LOL.

So far I have done three silly and fluffy fics, one uber!kinky dark fic, and one angst fic. So it definitely isn't out of the scope to do another fluffy fic. ;) I'm just in a cranky mood and that makes me want to make boys cry, dammit.

Oh man what you said below, too. For me, funny stories happen almost by accident. When I TRY to be funny it's just awful. So I dunno, I might do romantic? Wahhhh.

I'm in the same boat, a few funny/silly fics and mix of other stuff but I think it's the 'fluff on demand' that is freaking me out.

I think I have an idea - so I'm not really worried but my first reaction was Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

*g*

LOL ohnoz, that is the worst. I think everybody had that personal calculus at some point or another, as soon as she started killing off the main characters. Like 'eh, I'd be okay seeing X go, but if she kills Y I will shrivel into a ball and weep endless tears.' I was like that with Remus. OH REMUS. And with Sirius, so when I read the spoiler online (not even in an article or anything else where it's like, duh, my fault - but in someone's freaking messageboard signature) I was like 'Ahhah good joke there. That's a joke, right? ...Guys? Jokey joke? DDDDD:'

I'm a little concerned about how to take a creative angle with a happy ending. It's gonna be interesting because I think we're all gonna be geared towards pressing the same buttons with this type of challenge, which, y'know, certainly makes it challenging. *strokes beard*

I heard over the phone and LITERALLY went "NOOOOOOOooooooooo." Then I realized I probably write at LEAST half fluff and I don't know why it's blocking me so much. Haha. Also I keep coming up with cute ideas and then remembering it's PORNathon and forgetting that it needs to have sex in it. Ffffff.

YES!!!! EXACTLY! I try to write Merlin/Uther and it COMES OUT FUNNY. Entirely by accident!!!

If someone told me I HAD to write that pairing funny I would CRY.

And 'forced to be romantic' makes all my ideas feel lame.

HA!!! Yes. Exactly. I have a pile for 'sooo cute and funny but can't add porn in there' and a pile for 'PORN! would only really work if it had angst to give emotional resonance'

DAMMIT!!!

When we left the theater in the wee hours of Fri morning from seeing DH2, I think my bf's shoulder was soaked through with my tears, LOL. I'm such a sap.

I'm completely burned out on pthon and just ready for it to be done and over with. Five weeks would have been PERFECT for me to still feel happy about it. I also thought it would've made more sense for this week's challenge to be the final challenge but whatevs.

I'm the QUEEN OF FLUFFY AWW FIC. Writing feel-good smile-inspiring stuff is something I can do really well! I just need something more *specific*. I have an idea (which is a ridiculous idea, I think) and I've written 300 words, none of which are porn, LOL. JFC idek about this one.

If we had angst, I'd be interested in exploring that. I've never really done much angst besides grief. Not sure if I can do darkfic or not.

I totally agree with everything both of you just said!

Funny/fluffy/romantic needs to start with an independent plot idea that steers for the rainbow of its own accord.

Otherwise, I just end up with a slightly bedraggled and harried-looking bunny soaked in sugar water. Gross.

It's making the burn out BURN

YES. MOST ACCURATE DESCRIPTION EVER.

I think I would have done better if the challenge had been something like "you must include a bunny, a unicorn, AND/OR a rainbow in your entry." AT LEAST THAT GIVES ME SOMETHING TO WORK WITH.

Date: 2011-07-18 03:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] corilannam.livejournal.com
Yeah, the burn out is getting pretty bad all around, I think. I hope we're just hitting a wall and will push through it for these last couple weeks, but I dunno. I think I would have liked to have a week off after week 4 to recharge or something (which, yes, I recognize is against the spirit of the marathon, but I'd rather everyone were still having fun).

Yeah, I do best with a specific prompt that my brain can spin around to make something. I think that's the most frustrating thing about this week for those of us who are natural feel-good writers anyway -- WE SHOULD BE GOOD AT THIS, DAMMIT. THIS IS OUR ELEMENT. WHY IS IT SO FRICKING HARD??

I'm glad you have an idea! I do, too, though it seems a lot less exciting this morning than it did last night when I thought of it! I suspect at this point, it almost doesn't matter how much actual porn you have in it -- a lot of the winners and best-received stories last week only had a little bit, so I suspect people are getting a bit fed up with the porn and are looking for a good story more than anything. So let's fluff away and see what happens!

And yeah, I don't tend to do a lot of angst or darkfic in my normal writing either, which was why I was kind of looking forward to the darkfic challenge (if we had one this year). I did at least have an idea for that, one that I can't really use anywhere else!

Yeah, Remus was second only to Sirius on my list of LEAVE THEM THE HELL ALONE, JKR. By the time she got around to actually killing poor Remus, I was already pretty numb to it all. I was always upset with the way she handled Remus, so by the time he died, I was like, yeah, figures.

That sucks to get spoiled by a messageboard sig! How rude!

It really will be interesting to see what everyone comes up with. The pthon hivemind has been fascinating so far -- we tend to get these little pairs or sets of matching themes in the same week (VR, werewolves, apocalypse, etc.). I'm looking forward to seeing if such a vague challenge prompt leads to more variety or uniformity.

For myself, I really only have the one idea at the moment, so I'm just gonna run with it and see what happens. It certainly couldn't go over any worse than my entries the last two weeks, so I'm not too worried!

I'm truly less fired up about my idea then I was last night. I DO want something more specific. I'll look at it again today and see if I can make something out of it. I'm really interested in trying out some angst. I can do pining and grief, but angst... I'd like to give angst a shot. That would kind of be a bummer of a way to end the event, though, if angst or darkfic was our last challenge, lol!

I was always upset with the way she handled Remus

Ugh, agreed. WHY DO YOU TORTURE THE PUPPIES, JKR? ;____;

What cracks me up about the pthon hivemind is how it shifts every year. Like the AU challenge, for example - last year we had pirates and westerns and historical rewrites galore and almost none of that this year. Really does make it seem like we're all wearing tin-hats sometimes, y'know? XD

Good luck with your idea! I salute you, porn soldier! And I have no doubt it will be awesome, anyway, so it's easy to be lighthearted about it all from this side. ;D

Date: 2011-07-18 05:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] corilannam.livejournal.com
IKR?? We'd all just slink away from the last reveal and go cry in a corner. Though frankly, I will probably do that anyway!

Good luck with your idea! I hope you can make it into something you're excited about, even if it's not what you felt like writing this week. Mine is slowly coming together in my head, if not on paper.

It really is a shame there's no way to do team brainstorming sessions. :-(

Your team is a worthy foe and I am envious of your second base place stealing. I'm on Pride, so we were second last week. ;D

I don't have any ideas for this week yet. I'm better at humour and crack than angst, but like you said, I think it's definitely harder to do it on command than angst. Time to start angsting about fluff. :3

We've been sneaking up on you, slow but sure! But you guys are still well within striking distance. We'll have to fend you off with sticks this week (um...fluffy sticks? unicorn horns?)

I'm somewhat comforted that so many of us are angsting about the fluff. Hmm... is fluffy angst eligible??

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who got annoyed (to put it lightly) with the latter HP books. I did read them, but I threw them against the wall/floor enough times that my family finally stopped asking, "What was that?! Are you okay?"

I do enjoy the movies though - for the most part. I'm glad you enjoyed the last one; I haven't gotten to see it yet :( The perils of living in small town, USA.

I just saw Suits yesterday! WHAT A FUN SHOW. I love all the proud/snarky mentor looks Gabriel Macht/Harvey manages to shoot whenever Mike is being his silly self, especially because these looks happen to be terribly sexy. Also, again, how silly Mike is when he's not being a poor thing I want to cuddle and make Harvey buy things for. High fives! Fist bumps! "You know you want it." Wait, what?

You're definitely not the only one! I did enjoy most of the books and movies, I'm just not fannish about it anymore the way much of my flist is. Between killing/abusing my favorite characters and then how they were cast/treated in the movies, my fannish investment got cut off relatively early.

Hope you get to see the new movie soon!

ISN'T IT SO MUCH FUN? Harvey is such a sucker for Mike being silly and earnest, even when he's pretending to be stern about it. And... so am I. *g*
