Stargate Atlantis: "Rising"

corilannamI'm one of the (apparently few) people in the Stargate fandom who was really looking forward to Atlantis, and sure enough, I really liked it. I doubt I'm ever going to be as emotionally attached to it as I am to SG-1, but that's probably a good thing. It's stressful watching new SG; I'm going to enjoy having a fun Stargatey show to watch without emotional investment.
So the sets look really cool, especially the shiny Stargates and DHDs. I absolutely love that the puddlejumpers have Stargate remote controls in them. Too cool. The new uniforms are annoying -- one of the things I like about the atmosphere of SG is the military dress, different from the typical sci-fi catsuits and streamlined jackets. Let's not go in the wrong direction with the look.
The characters:
Weir -- Didn't like her as much in this as I did when she was on SG-1. It's not just the actress, it's just that the character felt a little off. But I loved how she was so nervous right before they left for Atlantis. No one ever seems nervous in these things, and they really ought to be.
Sheppard -- Not sure how I feel about him just yet. He grew on me a lot over the course of the pilot. I like the snarkiness, which is reminiscent of Jack, but has its own flavor. I like how he stepped up into the leadership role when he needed to. I like how he shot Sumner (Bye, Robert Patrick! Please get a role that lasts!), with that combination of coldness and compassion. He had some annoying moments, too, but I suspect I'll end up liking him in the long run.
McKay -- I love McKay. Love him, love him. I adored him on SG-1, as the perfect foil for Sam. I was worried that without her to play off, he would end up being more annoying than amusing, but he was great. "Using power! Using power! Using power!"
Ford -- I think I'm going to really like this one. He's such a cute puppy, and it's nice to see someone who's damn competent, but who's also having a really good time out there in the galaxy. I think I fell for him when he came after Sheppard against orders -- the only one smart enough to realize that without Sheppard, they can't go anywhere. His touchy-feeliness with Sheppard is also amusing. We'll see what happens with that.
Beckett -- I am very happy to be able to listen to Billy Boyd's voice on my TV every week. The character is amusing so far -- we'll see if he gets some depth.
Teyla -- I was worried the most about her, in terms of potential annoyance factors, but she's not bad so far. She's good playing off Sheppard, despite my vague annoyance at the manufactures Insta-UST.
The Wraith -- Really not sure about them. They are good and creepy, but somehow they kinda feel like a lot of different movie monsters all thrown together. I did love the harvesting beam. And the age-sucking thing. Still, not really a unique style to them. I miss the Goa'uld. So does, I suspect, everyone on this expedition now.
Okay, now for the really important part -- HOW CUTE WERE JACK AND DANIEL??? I mean, eeeeeeee!! Cute!
Excuse me, but even 24 hours later, I still had to get it out of my system.
Their banter was perfect, they both looked fabulous, and the text was barely even sub. "I could just--" "No." Hee! I didn't get the impression that Daniel really wanted to go that badly until he saw everybody else going without him. But he wasn't going anywhere without Jack, dammit.
And on that tangent, I scribbled out a little snippet that got into my head after watching that first part. J/D, post-"Rising"
Daniel stood in the doorway of his kitchen, crossed his arms over his chest, and watched Jack rummage through the refrigerator. He felt domestic, almost cosy, here at home; it was hard to believe that a few hours ago they had watched their colleagues march through the Gate to a galaxy so far away they might never return home at all.
Jack finally turned around, his arms full of bread and multiple jars of peanut butter and jelly. He stopped when he saw Daniel, eyes wide in the headlights of Daniel’s scrutiny. “What?”
“What?”
“No, you what.”
“I was just thinking.”
“Oh, God.” Jack carried his haul to the kitchen counter and laid out a sandwich assembly line. “Crunchy or smooth?”
“Crunchy. You know, I could be in the Pegasus galaxy right now, uncovering all the secrets of the Ancients that we’ve been hunting for so long.”
Jack froze with the knife poised, then calmly resumed his jelly selection. “Wasn’t ever going to happen, Daniel.”
“If Weir were still in command of the SGC, she would have sent me in her place.”
“Wasn’t ever going to happen, Daniel.”
“I’m just saying--“
“Look, Daniel.” The knife clattered onto the counter. Jack scrubbed his hand over his face and through his hair, leaving a streak of jelly on his cheek. A fine line deepened between his eyes, a sure sign Daniel was giving him a headache. “I understand if you resent my decision. But the last time you took a one-way trip to commune with the Ancients, it didn’t work out very well for anybody.”
“I wasn’t arguing.”
Jack lifted his eyebrows dubiously.
Daniel smiled and took a step forward, then another, until Jack was backing up, until his back hit the fridge. “I was just going to suggest that you could make it up to me.”
The fridge rattled as Daniel’s body pinned Jack’s against it. He felt Jack relax, then stiffen again with a better tension. “Yeah?” Jack said, arching against him and pulling him close. “We might have to work out an installment plan.”
“Okay.” Daniel knocked a flurry of magnets and papers off the fridge as he leaned in and mouthed the jelly from Jack’s face. “But I’m expecting a significant down payment.”
“I’m good for it,” Jack said into his mouth.
In the morning, Daniel woke with Jack leaning over him, the line back between his eyes. “Jack?”
“I was just thinking.”
“Oh, God.”
Jack’s mouth twitched, but he didn’t return Daniel’s smile. “I was thinking of all those poor slobs off in the Pegasus galaxy. They’re probably finding out the meaning of life and stuff as we speak.”
He reached up and massaged Jack’s temple with his thumb. “Probably. But I’m pretty glad I’m here and not there right now.”
The lines cleared from Jack’s face. “Yeah?”
“Yeah. Someone’s making it worth my while.”

Especially the part where Daniel is backing Jack up against the fridge and Jack tenses, as if he's really afraid that Daniel could, if he wanted to, do harm to Big Bad Jack O'Neill. Just that little bit made it very real and very current in canon.

Lovely little snippet. I didn't think Daniel really wanted to go, he just wanted to hear Jack say it. And then he wanted to blackmail him for hot make-up sex. ;-)
