My mp3 player has bitten the dust, after 8 months of mostly faithful service. Bus rides have become extremely twitchy and boring affairs. I need to replace it with something that might last a bit longer than my hapless Rio.

Were I to say that I was considering biting the bullet and shelling out for a real iPod, would anyone have any words of warning for me?

Not me. My iPod has been incredibly hassle-free. (there was one issue in which, after hooking it up to [Unknown site tag]'s computer, my own computer refused to see it as anything but a backup hard drive, but that was easily fixed by reinstalling the iPod software)

Seriously? This may be the easiest piece of tech I've ever owned.

Wait until mid-January if you can -- new iPod models will likely be announced the first week of January and that often leads to price structure changes. Or, buy somewhere with a 30-day post-purchase pricing guarantee. Apple itself offers I think a 14-day one, but you'd have to check.

Oh, and ALWAYS get AppleCare with any Apple product. It's totally worth it.

I have to say, I really adore my Creative. You might want to check it out -- cheaper than the ipod, and easier to deal with.

I've had no problems with my ipod, which I've had for about a year or so.

My iPod sucks the big one. I paid over $300 clams for the damn thing and it just doesn't want to work right. I went out and spent about $150 on a Sansumg Yepp and I am madly in love. Battery life is incredible and it just charges through the USB of your computer in no time.

I have no been overly fond of my iPod. Mine's been flaky, telling me it's charging when it's really not and so forth. I had an iRiver and I was in love with it. Honestly it was easy to use, lovely lovely device. The only problem is that it doesn't have as many gadgets for it as the iPod. It's really the only reason I went with Apple.

I've had good experiences buying iPods from ebay. I'm quite happy with my 15 gig, and haven't had any real problems with it.

Rodney is, as you know, wonderfully reliable. I've had him for a little over a year now, and he's never been anything but loving and trustworthy. Though he does seem to prefer my PC to Noel's Mac. *shrug*

Still, a fantastic toy.

But that's just my opinion. *g*

I heart my iPod! I only wish it was 60 GB instead of 20.

The Piper is pissy as hell about the DRM-inspired restrictions on downloading files from the iPod to the Mac (there's workaround software available for that, though), and there are other restrictions on what files you can load onto it, but I don't have the details. If you might want to buy tunes from someone other than Apple (or ripping them off your own CDs), you might want to look into that before sinking the $$$.

I'm seriously thinking about getting one to use for offloading photo files from my memory cards on long picture-taking trips (much easier to carry on a plane than a laptop), but before I buy, I'm going to go up to the Apple Store with one of said cards and make them upload the files from the card onto the iPod, and then transfer same from the iPod onto the Mac, while I stand there watching. If it's to my satisfaction, then they'll have me where they want me. *g*
