Halftime in Argentina-Nigeria
Jun. 12th, 2010 02:44 pmIt's funny how watching World Cup makes me happy like the Olympics used to, when the Olympics no longer do. It's that feeling of submersing oneself in international competition with all the intensity and passion. I think the difference is the truly crappy Olympic coverage we've been getting in the US the last couple of Olympiads. So far, ESPN seems to be doing a good job of just shutting up and getting on with the football.
Now if I could just figure out how to get the matches at work....

Date: 2010-06-12 04:41 pm (UTC)I hope to see much more of this game broadcast here in the U.S., perhaps played more here in the U.S. (I won't say the "s" word).
Have you seen the film "The Damned United"? I watched this several times over the couple of rental days and enjoyed it immensely. You might like it, too.
I've lost my passion for the Olympics, too. Do you think the Games still bear the same significance in today's world?

Date: 2010-06-13 03:19 am (UTC)I do think the Games still have a lot of significance in today's world, although I think we're losing sight of it here in the States. I used to be able to lose myself in all these fascinating sports I knew little about, and the stories of athletes from all over the world. Now the coverage focuses so heavily on the American medal count, we're lucky to see more than the top 3 finishers in any sport. The rhythm and story of the events have gotten lost in our disjointed, video game coverage, with the media slavering for the next big superstar.
