I've meant to write something here since Monday, but I've been spending all my free time writing TPM and reading Harry Potter fic. An odd combination of fannish renaissances, but I'm enjoying it. I even finally figured out how to fix my badly jossed (or should we call it jo'd?) Snape story, so when the TPM is done, I can go play with that.

Very little got done over the weekend, since I spent most of it off bug hunting with [livejournal.com profile] kris4n6 and Smitty (the LJless, of [livejournal.com profile] smitty_get_a_lj).

Cicadas, the 17-year type which have been swarming over the area for the last several weeks, turn out to be surprisingly cuddly when you get to know them. This is partly because they are big, clumsy, and too dumb to be skittish around humans. I'm gonna miss those guys.

Okay, not that much.

Last Thursday, I took half a day off work (a 2 1/2 day work week in total -- I pine for it now) and we went out to Great Falls, the Maryland side. I hadn't been there since college, and then it was with a large group of small children, so it was nice to hike around in the relative peace and solitude of a weekday afternoon. We found plenty of cicadas for Smitty to pick up and fondle and wear like jewelery, and for Kris to take slashy pictures of. Don't ask.

Afterwards, we went to IHOP, and then back to [livejournal.com profile] kris4n6's place to watch gay porn. As one does.

Friday we went down to the Natural History Museum, where their version of a cicada exhibit was surprisingly...well, lame. Fortunately, we had brought our own cicada, smuggled past security by posing like a broache on Smitty's jacket. Security, it should be mentioned, was rather lax that day.

We went straight for the bug museum, of course, where we chatted with an ancient woman who had just finished giving a bug talk to some children. She was fascinated with the fact that Smitty was from London; turns out she'd lived there, as an Anglican nun. She told us some interesting stories about her life, none of which I can remember now, and gave Smitty a test tube to contain her cicada, who was getting a little restless.

We did the rest of the museum and the gift shop (where I found an Egyptian section I didn't know existed, and bought a nifty little statue of a scribe), then went and picked up some more cicadas outside the Sculpture Garden. Then Smitty's birthday dinner at Austin Grill, where the waiter refused to sing to her, thus blowing our plans to demonstrate the most truly American birthday/humiliation tradition. I understand that she had it made up to her on Sunday, though.

Saturday was Prisoner of Azkaban day -- hence the HP renaissance.

Sunday I came home to find cats in my house -- [livejournal.com profile] lanning finally got her therapy kittens. Sasha and Cricket, named after her fanfiction versions of Clark and Lex. She's got pictures up here.

And then it was Monday again, which was quite a shock to my system, let me tell you. I had to go see PoA again to soothe the trauma.

You forgot the bit about where my food was so bad at Austin Grill that it made me really ill. ;) Fun!

The Smithsonian's exhibit was extremely lame. I was embarrassed by it. And I actually will miss the cicadas when they're gone. :(

Good news though! The tape of Big Guns isn't worn out! Turns out the video stabilizer on the VCR had been turned off. So it should all work fine now!!!!!

They're almost completely gone down here. Some places you can still hear them singing, but nowhere around me. Very sad. :-(

And whew! I'm glad that the porn is okay! That would have been too distressing, to lose it completely.
