Arlington Stargate Con Mini-Report

So there was a Stargate con down in Arlington this weekend, one of the Official Creation thingamadeals, and yesterday I escaped my computer woes by heading down with chelseafrew to see Michael Shanks and whoever else happened to be there.
A brief report:
I've never actually been to a Creation con, and I've heard nothing but horrible things about their cons, but it was actually a really nice experience. They were quite well-organized, at least for the couple of things we attended, and all the staff were quite professional and nice. It was a little creepy to have my armband being checked by people in military fatigues, though. A nice touch, but considering we were about a mile from the Pentagon, it just felt odd.
Alexis Cruz has the most adorable smile ever. Seriously. He's ten times cuter in person than he was as Skaara, and I thought Skaara was pretty darn cute. He's also very short.
Gary Jones is hysterically funny, at least the minute and a half we managed to catch of his talk after trying to get the hotel restaurant to actually consent to giving us food (I did finally score an awesome Reuben, though).
The dealer room was in general pretty lame, which I suppose should not be a surprise, but I did indulge in a lovely Jack/Daniel picture and a team shot, plus a t-shirt that says "Bow down before me, I am your god." I plan to wear it to the next fannish costume party I attend and tell people I'm going as a BNF.
So, Michael Shanks. Totally adorable, and as much of a hoot in person as I'd heard. He mocked the stupid questions, was absolutely darling to the kids who raised their hands (one little girl had done a drawing for him, and he made her come up to the stage and give it to him; after awwwwing over it, he hopped down from the stage and asked her for a hug), and was generally smart and funny (even if he overshared a little about the state of his intestinal tract after the brunch that morning).
He didn't say a whole lot that he hasn't said elsewhere, but he did share a little about the end of Season 8 and the general theme of Season 9. I will share here after the cut tag.
Apparently they're going to get rid of the rest of the Goa'uld by the end of this season. Daniel gets shot (he said 22 times, but he was probably joking) and dies in the finale, though he didn't specify as to which Daniel it was or how permanent the death was. There was a running joke about Daniel's habit of dying throughout the Q&A, and Michael joked that while he hoped Daniel would stop doing that soon, the finale would have "one more for the road."
Now that they've run out of bad guys, season 9 is going to go in a new direction based on the legend of King Arthur and the myth of Avalon. No details, but I found that kind of interesting, considering how hard they've tried to stay away from the Judeo-Christian mythos in general. Should be interesting to see what they do with it.

Ooh, this could be cool. Sort of strengthening the tie with Atlantis and the Ancients, I assume? I guess I don't really expect Stargate to have the kind of continuity and full circle feeling (unless we consider "Full Circle" something like a finale, and hey, maybe that's the reason for the ep title?) that we got with Buffy and Angel. The fact that the goa'uld will be killed off entirely doesn't actually seem to bother me much. I do wonder how they'll handle the Jaffa though.

Date: 2005-02-07 09:23 pm (UTC)Second reaction: WTF? I mean, seriously... T*F*???
Third reaction: well, in a weird way, Avalon (which after all belongs to a much older, pre-Christian mythic tradition than the Arthurian legends) has odd similarities to Atlantis. Uber-text-wise. Also, it would be an interesting way to re-inject SG-1 with the anthropological/mythic roots that many people have remarked they've been missing. So maybe that makes some sense and... my god, what am I saying?
Wow, is this going to be a very different show, isn't it?

Date: 2005-02-08 02:51 am (UTC)a friend and i counted - daniel was either dead or thought dead an average of twice a season for the first five. i'm wondering if they realized he survived seven and are trying for a quota in eight. ;)
