That's an interesting question about Merlin as master manipulator. The Excalibur story was certainly very manipulative, but I didn't see it in a bad light. More like that he believes so powerfully in Arthur that he's determined to make everyone see him the way Merlin does -- including Arthur himself. So I tend to think that he's just determined to fulfill their destiny any way he has to, like usual.
