Space Race
Aug. 2nd, 2003 10:50 amIt's been a long time since I've had to be home on a Friday night for a TV show. In fact, it's been since sophomore year of college, which was the last year X-Files was on Friday.
So overall, that was pretty fun. This season's been angsty enough so far that it was nice to have a lighter episode.
Things I Loved:
*Amanda Tapping in black leather. 'Nuff said.
*the Sam and Daniel -- I loved Daniel's subtle teasing about why Sam really wants to go on this "mission." They are such cute siblings.
*the Sam/Teal'c -- HELLO! I've been talking longingly about the Sam/Teal'c since I got into this fandom (which, okay, was like two months ago, but still), and all my friends just make faces of vague but tolerant distaste. BUT THERE IT IS! YOU ALL MUST SEE IT NOW! Ahem. Sorry. But how cute was that scene? Teal'c's blatant maneuvering to stay with Sam, even though he really had nothing more interesting to do there than he would have with Daniel and Jack at the negotiations. Maybe he was just tired of the still-newly reunited Jack and Daniel sneaking off to find a broom closet every few minutes (because they so were, you know it).
It's why, despite the fact that I love the soulful bond between Daniel and Teal'c, I could never do actual D/T. Teal'c has this special smile just for Sam and it gives me such little tingly warm fuzzies. I'm in a happy S/T place now.
*And hey, as long as I'm being shippery, isn't it lovely how Jack and Daniel can have about five minutes total screentime together in an episode, and yet manage to convey the distinct impression that the only reason they aren't on screen more is because they're too busy groping each other in the aforementioned broom closets?
I got a kick out of Daniel fidgeting around behind Jack while Jack was transmitting to Sam, like, "Come on, I'm waiting! Negotiations are over, let's not waste any more time!"
They were also immensely cute going after Teal'c and Eamon, especially trying to get past the receptionist.
*The Phantom Menace flashbacks. Unlike, I suspect, most of the SG people on my friends list, for me TPM was one of the best movie experiences of my life, all 17 times I saw it in the theater. So I had huge amounts of fun with all the Star Wars visuals in the city and of course the Pod--er, I mean, Space Race. I was bouncing around making the little "wakka!" sounds and quoting Sebulba. So that worked for me. As did the broadcasters, which combined TPM and SN flashbacks for me. Hey, at least none of them were Greg Proops with two heads!
*Eamon. I loved Eamon. He was channeling David Hyde Pierce so hard it hurt, and it totally worked. He and Teal'c were adorably goofy in the bellhop outfits. I seriously expected Jack to pull out a fiver and try to tip "Murray."
*Okay, I really want to know who the hell Daniel was talking to on the phone in the middle of the corridor at the end. I mean, has he forgotten where his office is again? Or can he just not go more than a minute at a time without talking to his honey?
JACK: Hey.
DANIEL: Hey.
JACK: Where are you?
DANIEL: B Corridor. You?
JACK: My office.
DANIEL: So, whatcha wearing?
JACK: Um... BDUs. What are you wearing?
DANIEL: Um... pretty much the same thing.
JACK: So, broom closet in 15?
DANIEL: Sounds good. Oh, hell, here comes Sam. Gotta go!
Things that could have been better:
*Well, the plot. Though in a light episode, I'm not all that fussy about plot holes.
*In a Sam-heavy episode, I was left feeling like Sam really didn't get to do all that much. I wanted more adrenaline. I don't know. I just really wanted her to kick some butt, and I don't want to wait until next year's race. But still, lots of independent Jack-free Sam, and I'm always in favor of that.
Overall, I had a good time with this one. I still think they're doing a pretty good job of covering for RDA's absences, and conveying the feeling of team episodes even when the team isn't all in the same place. But again, it's not really that hard to make me happy -- gotta love the honeymoon. *g*

LOL! Yep, that works for me. And it certainly explains why we barely saw the boys in this epi. They are *so* doing it.

Date: 2003-08-02 09:59 am (UTC)This is exactly why it *didn't* work for me. Not only do I not ever want to be reminded of TPM again, if humanly possible...and I saw it about 12 times in the theater, myself, and was active in that fandom forfreakin'ever, so I'm entitled to say that...but I really dislike the blatant way SG rips off every other sci-fi movie/show ever invented when they run out of good ideas. I was bored.
(I'm so out of the honeymoon period, now. *g*)
Also, quercus has written some Sam/Teal'c stories, so...other people see it, too.

Date: 2003-08-02 11:23 am (UTC)That's a shame, but I totally hear you. I've got fandoms like that -- in fact, that's a big reason why I resisted Stargate for so long in the first place. Too much about how people talked about Jack and Daniel reminded me strongly of The Sentinel. And thinking about TS usually makes me want to vomit. Very little exaggeration there. But except for the odd moment, I've mostly gotten over seeing any resemblance, thank goodness.

I'm of mixed feelings with regards to SG's little "homages." On the one hand, it's not like they try to be sneaky about it, and sometimes in stand-alone episodes like this one, it works for me. But I don't really like it when they do it in the middle of their own major arcs. As much as I love "Full Circle," the confrontation between Darth Anubis and Daniel-Wan is darn near unwatchable for me. SG has its own mythology, and it's a damn good one. Why do they need to steal, except out of laziness, or some misguided fanboyishness? If that's even a word. *g*

Hee! No! But you hide it so well! *g*

Yeah, I've read a few authors who like to include some Sam/Teal'c along with their Jack/Daniel, and I always really enjoy that. I just wish it were a major ship in its own right, but maybe it is and I just haven't found it yet. It's a scary-big fandom. :-)
Gorgeous icon, btw.

I wasn't the only one, then. ::grins::
I got that distinct impression that they were just about to jump in the sack together when Jack shut the thing off, and I swear... as he leaned closer to the screen, it was like he was looking for the switcher to change to porn movies.
Imagine that being left on while Sam was on the other end...
JACK: Hey.
