As if it weren't bad enough that we have a sniper cruising around the area randomly murdering people, now the local news radio station is trying to murder the English language.

Quoth the reporter: "We want to know who or whom the sniper or snipers are."

Ow.

At least they didn't event a "news word" to add insult to injury. Like when they can't think of the real word so they say dumb things like: "Is there a particular profile for a person who develops a snipertude?"

Yeah, that's just ridiculous and annoying.

Though I kind of want to coin a new word myself -- sniperiffic.

It would have several different possible usages in news, advertising and ordinary conversation --
"It's been a sniperiffic day in the Nation's Capital."

"I have to get gas tonight on the way home. Damn, that's just going to be sniperiffic."

"Chevrolet Astro vans--buy one today! They're sniperiffic!"

And now imagine trying to explain the four different cases of German to an English speaker... takes Jedi serenity, I tell ya. I can only imagine what Finnish must be like to teach!!

Oh, I hear ya. I had to do German tutoring in high school, and you've never seen a wide-eyed sheep imitation until you've tried to explain the difference between accusative and dative case to an English speaker who has never taken a foreign language before. Not as bad as Greek, though, I think. But the very thought of Finnish sends cold shivers down my back...
