"You were always jealous of Remus," Sirius snapped. "Always."
James laughed derisively. "Jealous of him? What have you been smoking?"
"You were. You resented him." Sirius let his eyes narrow in a glare he had never before turned on his best friend. "From the day I started dating him."
"I was happy for you, once I was sure you weren't just using him as an easy fuck," James shot back, meeting and matching the glare. "I never resented him, any more than you resented Lily. Unless there's something you haven't told me."
"Lily was different, and we both know it." A buzzing in his ears and a tremor in his body warned him that he was out of control. He ignored it, his own resentment blazing out of him. "But you were always bitter about Remus, because if you thought that if I wanted to fuck anyone of the male persuasion, I should have wanted you."
James' head snapped back, and his face went white. "How dare you say that?" he said, voice so thin Sirius could not have heard him, if everything else hadn't been silent as death. "How dare you even think that, after everything?"
Sirius stared at him. He could finally hear his own words, and feel the shame burning through his face, but he couldn't find a way to take them back. "James-- I'm sorry. I--"
"No," James said in the same cold voice. "Get out. Get out of my house."
Still shaking, the anger fading into shock, Sirius went.
